MAJOR INVESTMENT TO REOPEN HISTORIC LOUGHBOROUGH PUB

A £300,000 investment is set to reopen an historic Loughborough pub after a six-month closure.

The refurbishment of The Blacksmiths on Wards End is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs & Bars. It will turn the rundown local into a stylish pub with a stunning new décor and all-weather garden. Work starts on 26th February and the pub will reopen in mid April creating 20 new jobs.

The project will carefully renovate the outside of the distinctive building – which is Locally Listed and dates back to 1931 – bringing out all its character and enhancing the surrounding area. A sheltered year-round garden will be developed by knocking a garden room into a courtyard at the rear of the pub. The space will be partially covered and have funky decoration with murals, festoon lighting and brightly coloured furniture seating 40 customers.

The Blacksmiths’ tired, dated interior will be transformed with a smart stripped back look. Features such as exposed brickwork, parquet floors and original fireplaces will be retained and restored and complemented with contemporary furnishings, quirky artwork and designer light fittings. The loos have not been forgotten, either, and will have a major makeover in a retro style.

With sports fans in mind, the revamp will install a high spec AV system and big screens showing Sky and TNT Sports.

A kitchen refit will enable a new menu of freshly prepared food. Alongside pub classics like fish & chips, The Blacksmiths will specialise in sour dough pizzas and southern fried chicken cooked in a secret blend of herbs and spices and topped with homemade sauces ranging from Korean barbecue to jerk and Hunter’s. Deserts will focus on sweet pizzas, waffles and ice cream and deep fried pizza dough donuts served with an array of indulgent toppings. The focus on fresh will extend to the drinks selection, which will include craft beers and cocktails shaken and stirred to order. Barista quality coffee will be available all day.

In addition to providing great food and drinks during the day, The Blacksmiths will be the place for a great night out with regular live music and DJs.

Comments Derek Moore, Star Pubs & Bar’s area manager for Loughborough: “We’re delighted to be investing in The Blacksmiths – it’s a beautiful old building in a prominent location and we’ve giving it the works. We want to make it into a top quality venue with a city centre feel that brings something a bit different to Loughborough.”
