The Surrey Cricketers in Windlesham to benefit from extensive refurbishment

Work starts this week on a £272,000 refurbishment of The Surrey Cricketers in Windlesham by Star Pubs & Bars, Heineken’s pub business and new licensee Kanwar Gurmohan to create a relaxed family friendly village pub serving great food.

The Surrey Cricketers, which has been closed for several months, will reopen early August with a new manager at the helm and 15 new local jobs created.

Kanwar brings with him a wealth of food experience, having previously been operating chef for Jamie Oliver restaurants overseeing the culinary offer across the company’s cafes, bars and restaurants.  Prior to that he was executive chef for the Lord Mayor of London where he was responsible for major events ranging from the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to presidential dinners.

His plans for The Surrey Cricketers, his first pub, include an exciting menu of traditional pub dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and high-quality British produce as well as many vegan and vegetarian options.  A woodfired pizza oven providing authentic stone-baked sourdough pizzas and slow cooked woodchip smoked meats will take centre stage at the pub.

Funds are being spent on a sympathetic refurbishment and upgrade of the 19th century pub. The interior is being reconfigured to create a 120-seater restaurant with a bar for more casual drinking and dining, increasing seating capacity in the pub by over 50%.

Outside, the pub will be given a facelift with new lighting, signage and planters added.  A smart new front garden area is being created and a landscaped rear garden with a dedicated kids’ play area.  Between the two there will be seating for 120 for alfresco eating and dining.

The Surrey Cricketers will serve food daily from 11.30 and on weekends will open at 10.00am for breakfast and a bottomless prosecco breakfast brunch.

Drinks at The Surrey Cricketers will include cask and craft ales, such as Beavertown Neck Oil and Maltsmiths, and premium lagers like Birra Moretti and Heineken Served Extra Cold.  There will be an extensive and eclectic wine list with wines from around the world to match the food offer and the gin menu will be a walkthrough celebration of Britain by time and location.

There will also be a good selection of cocktails and spirits.  And, for those wanting an alcohol-free option, the pub will be one of the first in the area to offer Heineken 0.0 on tap.

Kanwar wants the pub to continue its role at the heart of the community.  In addition to showing live sports, he plans to hold wine and cask ale tasting sessions, cookery classes with butchers and fishmongers, and pizza dough stretch classes.

Kanwar said: “The Surrey Cricketers will be something of a local institution, a charming neighbourhood pub with bags of character – somewhere comfortable where you’re guaranteed a warm welcome.  You can pull up a stool at the bar for a proper pint or enjoy top notch British fare in the cosy dining room or in one of he snugs.  There will be roaring fires in winter and alfresco dining in the summer.

“I’ve got a great team lined up for The Surrey Cricketers who can’t wait to open the doors and meet the local community and find out what they’d like from their pub.  I want to offer the sort of independently run, unique friendly pub with great food and drink that the area deserves, to support local suppliers and to help create local jobs.”

Star Pubs & Bars regional operations director, Dugald Macer said: “The Surrey Cricketers is in a fantastic location with lots of space inside and out.  It just needed the décor, food and drinks being brought up to date.  It will now have these and an enthusiastic team with some innovative ideas to take it forward.  Kanwar has an extensive knowledge of food and a passion for what he does which will result in a great local.

“HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing £50m this year in pubs like The Surrey Cricketers to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive in their communities for years to come. Pubs need to evolve to remain relevant to consumer needs. The refurbishment will improve the appearance, comfort and facilities and creating a sociable place where people of all ages can come together.”

Bookings can be made from the middle of July. To follow progress on the refurbishment of The Surrey Cricketers see… Facebook - @thesurreycricketers, Instagram- Thesurreycricketerswindlesham or www.thesurreycricketers.com
