Dunstable High Street to benefit from £280,000 refurbishment of The Crown

Building work started this week on a major £280,000 joint refurbishment of The Crown on the High Street in Dunstable by Heineken's pub business, Star Pubs & Bars, and new licensees, Bedfordshire based Number One Entertainment.

The pub, which has been closed since March 2018, is to reopen at the end of July as The New Crown with 10 new jobs created.  A party will be held on the 3rd August to celebrate the bar’s reopening.

Funds are being spent creating a cutting-edge relaxed friendly bar offering food, coffee and tea in the day transitioning to a top end late night venue hosting DJs, live music and dancing as well as karaoke and comedy nights.

A major part of the investment will be spent upgrading the roof garden.  Once finished, it will have its own bar, a covered area, new furniture and festoon lighting as well as a stunning plant wall and graffiti style wall art for instagram moments.

The inside will have a contemporary reclaimed hipster look with industrial style finishes and part panelled and part exposed brick walls with striking artwork and neon signs.

The bar is being reconfigured to create more space and will offer craft lagers, exciting cocktails, extensive gin and wine ranges including a wide selection of sparkling wines and champagnes as well as a premium red, green and black teas and barista style coffee.

Cakes, pastries and afternoon snacks will be served in the bar along with sharing meat and cheese boards, burgers, hot dogs and The New Crown special, a traditional Cuban hot-pressed sandwich with slow roast pork, ham and Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard.

The Roof Top Terrace will have a different menu from the main bar and will offer table service with cocktail and gin trees delivered to tables, adding to the sense of occasion.

As a late-night micro-club open till 2am, ensuring customers feel relaxed and safe is central to The New Crown’s ethos.  The bar will have a strict good behaviour policy, use ID card scanning and is appointing a leading home counties and north London security company.

Neil Williams, acting regional operations director for Star Pubs & Bars said:  "The New Crown's central location and superfast wi-fi makes it a great meeting place, ideal for shoppers, workers and students in the day, becoming a trendy upmarket bar with a cool vibe at night.

“The New Crown is going to be very different to anything else in Dunstable.  It will be the only place to open in the day and as a late-night venue and is bringing a contemporary new look to the town.  We and Number One Entertainment hope the opening of The New Crown will kickstart further regeneration on the High Street and support local businesses by bringing people back into the heart of the town.

“This investment is part of a £50 million investment that Heineken is making in pubs around the country this year - a sign of our confidence in the future of the Great British pub.”
