The Hurt Arms was refurbished last year with weddings in mind, adding a function room with bar and loos, letting rooms and a bridal suite. 12 weddings were held in the first seven months and 45 booked for 2019. The pub also hosts supplier funded wedding fairs. Says General Manager Luke Richards: “Our experience shows it takes two years to build wedding trade. We anticipate it’ll generate 40% of our income. If you’ve got the right type of pub with a private facility or space for a marquee, hosting weddings or civil ceremonies provides guaranteed incremental income. Civil licenses only take 10 weeks to obtain but you can’t have a bar in the ceremony room unless it’s screened off. Hosting weddings we believe is about attention to detail and presentation. Couples want fantastic service, so we only promise what we can deliver, as most business is word of mouth.”
