Theatre Puts Pub in the Lime Light

Theatre Puts Pub in the Lime Light

The conversion of two first floor storage rooms into a vibrant 50-seat theatre boosts takings at The Bridge House, Penge, by up to 25% every time there’s a performance. Having been approached by a theatre company needing a base, licensee Sinon Kelly gained approval from the building’s owners and a theatrical performances license before investing £10,000 creating a suitable space. “We knocked the rooms together, painted the walls black, soundproofed the floor and added air conditioning and chairs. The theatre’s founders provided the rest,” says Sinon.

Four years later the theatre runs productions five months of the year. Adds Sinon, ‘We don’t charge rent or utilities; the sales uplift makes it worthwhile. The audience walks through the pub to access the theatre so it introduces lots of new people to The Bridge House. Local residents love it and it gives the pub a special place in the community.”
