Refurbishment sees The Blues Smokehouse open in Slough

We’ve begun work on a major £600k renovation of The Assembly in Slough with multiple operator, PS The Pub Company. The exciting refurbishment will see around 50 full and part-time jobs created in the town.

The site, which has been closed since 2004, is being transformed into an authentic American themed BBQ restaurant and bar, to be renamed The Blues Smokehouse, the only one of its kind in Slough, and will re-open late April.

The large 140 seat bar restaurant is the third Blues Smokehouse in the UK, all of which are Star sites. It will open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, whilst also including a coffee and bakery bar. The look and atmosphere will be in line with the other Blues Smokehouses, relaxed American deep South, featuring stripped wooden floors, packing cases, brick walls and a mix of booth and freestanding up-cycled seating.

A feature of the interior will be an open servery where customers can see the preparation and smoking of all the fresh produce daily. The coffee bar and bakery will also be an Italian/ American ice cream bar serving milkshakes, smoothies and sundaes, along with hot waffles.

The meat is all smoked by The Blues Smokehouse team, with wood sourced to create the perfect taste. Sauces and rubs, such as hickory, applewood and mesquite are prepared to special recipes created by executive chef, Jackie Weight, the only Brit, as well as the only woman, to have won the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue. The meat is cooked using authentic American smokers along with grilled cuts on the churrasco grill and rotisseries for the chicken, giving genuine BBQ flavours. Jackie plans to give tips and masterclasses on BBQ cooking and will offer tours of the smoking kitchen. And for salad lovers, there’s a selection of super food salads, packed full of goodness.

The Blues Smokehouse is the brainchild of Carlos Maidana, director of PS The Pub Company, who said: “the location in the heart of Slough is ideal for a Blues Smokehouse and marks the start of the £1bn regeneration of the town. Unlike our other sites where we were restricted by the buildings, we’ve started with a blank canvas to work with at The Assembly which is enabling us to create a real wow factor.”

“Other outlets are doing BBQ and smoking meat as part of an extended menu, however we are all about genuine and authentic BBQ, it’s our raison d’être. Our rubs and sauces have proved so popular in fact that we are now producing them to sell direct to customers and will be launching a retail brand.”

Chris Jowsey said: “the Assembly in Slough has been vacant for many years. It’s needed a visionary licensee and restauranteur to take it on. Carlos and his team have made a great success of their other Blues Smokehouses in Bracknell and Twickenham, which are also Star Pubs & Bars sites, so we are delighted to partner with them again and to be part of Slough’s regeneration, investing in creating a fun place to eat and drink with long-term appeal.”
