One of the Best Cask Ale Pubs in Britain

One of the Best Cask Ale Pubs in Britain

Ross Evans, the licensee of The Ship Tavern in Holborn, has been in the pub trade for most of his life. His family has close ties with pubs in London with his great grandparents running a pub in Great Portland Street and both his grandfather and father running their own respective pubs in the West End. Over a hundred years of pub heritage is in his blood, so it’s only natural that Ross is the licensee of one of the Best Cask Ale pubs in Britain.

Ross took over The Ship Tavern five years ago and continues to improve the pub’s offering. He wanted to place an emphasis on cask ales as there are only a couple of traditional pubs left in the area. The pub has great draughts on offer while also boasting a collection of 67 different gins. Upstairs, it offers a restaurant with a wide range of dishes while downstairs serves traditional pub snacks that both the locals and the tourists love. He’s paired up with a local hotel to offer tourists a taste of a proper British pub, even offering pints in pewter tankards for theatrics. But the real attraction for this pub is its cask ale knowledge and offering.

A great pint of cask ale says a lot about a pub. Included in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide of pubs, The Ship Tavern has four permanent casks and two casks rotating weekly through a partnership with Caledonian Brewery. They even have their own cask ale on offer, The Ship Tavern 1549. Ross has incorporated his love of ales with their delicious food offering by hosting beer and food tastings and festivals in the restaurant and pub.

The staff of this pub know their cask ales. They take pride in familiarising themselves with tasting notes and ensure that they are educated on the tasting notes and ales so they in turn can educate the customers. From the serve and quality of the ales, you can tell that Ross and his staff are very proud of their offering. If you’re in the Holborn area, stop by and see the fantastic serves for yourself.
