Major refurbishment of Gretna Green pub and hotel breaks ground

Work has started on a major £220k refurbishment of the Hazeldene pub and hotel on Main Street in Gretna Green by Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars and licensees Paula Baillie and Kieran White. The refurbishment will double the Hazeldene’s staff, creating 15 new jobs from bar and reception to kitchen and housekeeping positions.

Work is being undertaken over the next seven weeks and is being staggered to minimise closure of the public bar.

The project will transform the Hazeldene giving the local bar a smart but comfortable new look. The refurbishment will increase the size of the lounge and restaurant by 50% by extending into disused rooms and by creating a stunning outside deck with seating for 40 and will include retractable covers and heaters to enable year-round use. The work includes completely redecorating the building inside and out, refurnishing, upgrading the kitchen and making over the toilets.

Paula and Kieran, who are celebrating their second anniversary at the Hazeldene this month, are also introducing a host of new services for locals. A barista quality coffee machine is being installed in the pub and opening hours extended from 8am enabling the Hazeldene to serve breakfasts, coffees, pastries and cakes throughout the morning. The couple is also launching the area’s first takeaway for British food and beer including a delivery service. Paula and Kieran hope that the revamped lounge bar will provide a high quality but affordable space for local functions and are launching the facility with the introduction of monthly dinner and tribute act evenings.

The investment is a ‘dream come true’ according to Kieran and Paula. The couple previously ran a taxi business in Lanarkshire but fell in love with the Hazeldene when they first saw it. “It was love at first sight. We took four steps into the bar and knew we had to have it,” recalls Kieran. Since taking the reins, they have worked tirelessly to revive the Hazeldene’s fortunes by redecorating and extending the letting rooms.

“It’s great to be able to give the pub the TLC and investment it deserves. It’s also our small way of thanking the community for the warm welcome they have given our family. Gretna Green feels like home now thanks to their support,” says Kieran.

Lawson Mountstevens, managing director for Star Pubs & Bars, said: “Kieran and Paula’s success in turning round the Hazeldene is a real tribute to their commitment, hard work and talent. Heineken is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing in pubs like the Hazeldene to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive at the heart of their communities for years to come.”
