£320k refurbishment begins at The Old Oak, Rutherglen

Work has started on a major £320,000 refurbishment of The Old Oak, Rutherglen, by Star Pubs & Bars, HEINEKEN’s pub business, and local pub operators David Milligan and David Rossiter, who have 20 years’ experience of running pubs and operate four other popular pubs in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The Old Oak will re-open in early to mid-December as a top-quality community local offering great value home cooked food, live sports and live weekend entertainment.  Ten new jobs are being created as a result.

Funds are being spent upgrading the pub for regulars and to broaden its appeal including making it more family friendly. This includes a new entrance and redecoration of the exterior.

The interior is being reconfigured to create a spacious bar with high stools and tables for drinkers and those wanting to play darts or watch live BT or Sky sports on the new large high definition TVs.  For those wanting a quieter place for a drink or somewhere to eat, there will be a new seating area with tables, upholstered chairs and booths. USB points are being installed throughout the pub for customers to charge their portable devices. The loos are also being upgraded and a baby changing facility installed.

The pub’s new look will be traditional with a mix of timber panelling and exposed brick walls, a distressed metallic paint finish on the ceiling as well as rustic timber floors, new carpet and tiles.

David Milligan explained: “We’re not a managed pub chain. We don’t believe one size fits all. Our pubs are all unique and focussed on the different needs of their customers.  What they share in common is high levels of customer service.

“We really liked The Old Oak when we saw it but, realising there wasn’t another pub within half a mile, felt more could be done to ensure it met the needs of the broader community on its doorstep.

“Paul Pender, one of the managers of our other pubs, who has 20 years’ experience working in pubs and restaurants, will be moving to Rutherglen to run The Old Oak and is very much looking forward to becoming part of the community.  As is Ronnie McKay, the chef at our Edinburgh pub, Ryries, which has a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, who will be in charge in the kitchen.”

The Old Oak will offer a range of traditional Scottish food, plus popular favourites like burgers and curries as well a children’s menu and a great Sunday lunch.  All food will be home-cooked and freshly prepared using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible.

The menu will feature a selection of breakfasts including a full Scottish and a vegetarian option; snacks like Scotch pie, chips and beans or Traditional sausage and onion stovies, and more substantial mains like Beer battered locally sourced haddock and chips, Home-made steak pie and Balmoral chicken. There will also be a two-course lunch menu for £7.95, Monday to Thursday between 12.00 and 4.00pm and in the New Year, the pub will introduce weekly curry and steak nights.

Drinks-wise, The Old Oak will be extending its range to include premium gins, vodkas, whiskies and rum, a range of malt whiskies and wines, some local cask ales, popular lagers as well as packaged craft beers.  A top-quality coffee machine is also being installed as the new licensees want to attract people into the pub during the day for coffees, cakes and snacks.

As part of the refurbishment HEINEKEN is installing the latest beer dispense technology, its HEINEKEN Smart Dispense system, which produces consistent superior quality draught beer and cider.

David added: “We’re very keen that The Old Oak is the beating heart of the area and want to hold charity fundraisers as well as having space to host anniversaries, christenings and birthday celebrations and funerals. We would be delighted for local community groups, societies and charities to use the pub for their get-togethers.  Entertainment at the weekend will continue to be a highlight of the week and in the new year we shall kick off a weekly pub quiz.”

Brian Davidson Star Pubs & Bars Regional Operations Director said: “The two Davids have a wealth of experience of running popular pubs and a clear vision for The Old Oak.  It’s in a great location with many residents living within easy walking distance and a carpark for those living further afield wanting to drive.

“We’re delighted to be refurbishing The Old Oak as HEINEKEN is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing £20 million this year in pubs like The Old Oak Inn to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive in their communities for years to come.”
