Major refurbishment rings in the changes at Banbury pub

A £320,000 refurbishment of The Bell, Banbury by Star Pubs & Bars and Northamptonshire based pub operator Mark Lynch is now underway. The investment will transform this historic local into a great quality pub that the whole community can enjoy and make cask and craft beer, as well as freshly made artisan pizzas, a particular speciality.

Banbury resident and licensee since 2017, Sian Griffiths, will remain at The Bell’s helm with work expected to take approximately five weeks. The new ‘Bell craft and cask’ pub is scheduled to re-open in April with seven new jobs added as a result of the extensive improvements.

Work will include a complete renovation and restyle of the building, adding new lighting and signage externally to make it an attractive feature of Banbury. A beautiful all-weather courtyard garden – complete with outdoor lighting – will be created behind the pub, and an open-sided outbuilding upgraded into an alfresco area with a big screen for showing sports and other events.

The Bell dates back to 1837 and was enlarged by incorporating an adjoining petrol station and garage into the building around 80 years ago. The internal refurbishment will give the pub a stunning new look, with lots of quirky features reflecting its historic past. The redecoration proposes to be both contemporary and comfortable and will give The Bell a much lighter and more airy feel.

To ensure the finest quality at The Bell, the refurbishment programme includes upgrading the cellar with state-of-the-art dispense equipment. With craft beer, ciders and cask ales being sourced from local breweries, an extensive selection of gins and rums to be introduced plus hot drinks for commuters and coffee lovers alike The Bell will be renowned for it’s great quality drinks. Further complimented by the authentic

in-house pizzas cooked in the specially-imported Italian oven to ensure delicious hot pizzas pair perfectly with every pour.

Says licensee Sian Griffiths: “The Bell has a loyal following but it is dated and needs a little TLC and a big investment to give it a new lease of life. The plans for The Bell are very exciting – there’ll be nowhere else like it in Banbury.”

Comments Star Pubs & Bars operations director Neil Convery:  “The plans are extremely creative and will make The Bell unique both inside and out. The pub has served Banbury for nearly two centuries, and we’re delighted to be investing to give people more reasons to visit, and ensure it continues to thrive into the future.”
